Sarajevo
Sarajevo, Hauptstadt von Bosnien und Herzegowina, am Miljacka, im östlichen Teil des Landes. Vor dem Ausbruch des Bürgerkrieges in Jugoslawien war sie ein wichtiges Handels- und Kulturzentrum. Teppiche, Seidenstoffe, Schmuckwaren, Tabakwaren und Werkzeugmaschinen werden in der Stadt hergestellt. Sarajevo hat mehrere Ausbildungs- und Kultureinrichtungen, wie das Landmuseum von Bosnien und Herzegowina (188 und eine Universität (1946). 1984 fanden in der Stadt die Olympischen Winterspiele statt. Nach der Abspaltung von Bosnien und Herzegowina von Jugoslawien im April 1992 war Sarajevo Schauplatz zahlreicher Kämpfe zwischen Serben, Kroaten und bosnischen Muslimen. Nach diesen Kämpfen und nach der Belagerung der Stadt durch die Serben ist der Großteil von Sarajevo heute zerstört.
