Remembering Macedonia’s National Liberation Struggle
Published on Oct 11, 2012 by Phillip Butler
Tuesday marked the 71st Anniversary of Macedonia’s National Liberation Struggle. In celebration an awards ceremony was held to recognize Macedonians in the fields of science, art, economics, and other key areas of public interest.
For those unfamiliar with Macedonia’s struggle, in 1942 the country was in the grip of Bulgarian occupiers allied with Nazi Germany. Partisans began operations against the occupiers on October 11 of that year marking the beginning of the Macedonian people’s uprising. Later in 1944 this insurgent army went on the offensive causing the Bulgarians severe losses.
By the end of WW II the Macedonian Liberation Army numbered some 56,000. Their contribution to the war effort, and to the Balkan region as a whole, was fundamental in the victory of the Allies over the Axis powers in that war. Now a member of the United Nations, Macedonia celebrates those who sacrificed everything for freedom.
Award recipients at Tuesday’s ceremonies included academicians Vlado Kambovski and Dimitar Mircev, writer Vele Smilevski and opera singer Boris Trajanov, Samuel Sadikario was also presented an award in the health, sports and humanity category. Meanwhile, official government representatives laid flowers at the foot of Macedonian national hero’s monuments across the country.
Leaders and heroes of the People’s Liberation Army of Macedonia include; Mirče Acev, Kuzman Josifovski-Pitu, General Mihajlo Apostolski, the first President of the Socialist Republic of Macedonia Metodija Andonov-Čento, and Svetozar “Tempo” Vukmanović, who was proclaimed People’s Hero of Yugoslavia. A special note here, both the original organizers, Mirče Acev and Kuzman Josifovski-Pitu (image top memorial), were captured, tortured and killed by the Bulgarians in 1943 and 1944. They remain, heroes of the people.

Macedonia marks 72 years of National Liberation Fight
Tomorrow Republic of Macedonia marks 72 years since the anti-fascist uprising and liberation war.
On 11th of October, 1941 the veterans of the First Prilep Partisan Detach Forces attacked the Bulgarian police uchastok and telephone – telegraph network in Prilep, which marked the beginning of the organized uprising of Macedonians against the Bulgarian, Italian and German occupiers to liberate the country. The next day, 12th of October 12, the partisans of Kumanovo unit reacted.
11th of October is an extension of the libertarian traditions of the Macedonian freedom- nation permeated by Karposh, Razlog, Kresna and Ilinden Uprising and the efforts for social and national liberation invested in the Balkan Wars and the First World War.
By the decision to join the anti-fascist coalition, Macedonia took the side of progressive mankind, against fascism as the darkest ideology of contemporary history and the strongest negation of general civilized and democratic values.
Since the first partisan units who started the fight, the National Liberation Army of Macedonia at the end of the four-year war has grown into a well-organized 110 – thousand army with military formations of highest rank as corps and divisions.
During the occupation of Macedonia were interned 58,000 people and despite the atrocities committed by the occupiers against innocent civilians, and the country suffered huge economic damage. The crowns of the fight are the decisions of the First Session of the ASNOM in 1944, which realized the ideals lasting for several centuries for establishing the Macedonian state.
Crossing the path of its multi development and growth as part of Yugoslavia and 20 years as independent state, getting over the conflict in 2001 and the resulting Framework Agreement, Macedonia, which is a full member of the United Nations, now is on the road to Euro-Atlantic integration, which unfortunately now is blocked by Greece, which does not accepts our constitutional name.
Seventy- second anniversary of the uprising tonight will be marked by solemn Academy in the new building of the Macedonian National Theatre, where the President of the Republic of Macedonia, Gjorgje Ivanov will addressed the audience.
In Parliament, tomorrow will be awarded the state award “11th of October” to this year’s winners – the economist and diplomat Srdjan Kerim for lifetime achievement in science and education, the artist Reshat Ameti for lifetime achievement in the field of culture and art and the journalist and publicist Dragoslav Argirovski for lifetime achievement in journalism.
On the occasion of the holiday, a number of delegations tomorrow will lay flowers at the monuments of national heroes.
