    Albania opens six diplomatic missions, more in the pipeline

    Albania’s cabinet has approved the opening of diplomatic missions in Belgium, Slovakia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates.

    Diplomatic representations will also open in Mexico, South Africa, Australia, Norway, Estonia and Pakistan, Prime Minister Sali Berisha said in a statement (Keshilli i Ministrave).

    Berisha proposed the abolition of visas for tourists visiting the Dalmatian and Montenegro coasts.

    “A unique visa regime is needed for all these countries, so that tourists will not need a visa at the border, but they can tour all the countries during the summer,” he added. Business News : Albania opens six diplomatic missions, more in the pipeline

    Ruinenstadt Butrint in Albanien

    Hier finden Sie Informationen über die Ruinenstadt Butrint in Albanien, die zum UNESCO Weltkulturerbe gehört.

    Butrint war von der Antike bis ins Mittelalter von unterschiedlichen Völkern besiedelt. So präsentiert die Stadt heute eindrucksvolle Denkmäler und Ruinen der einzelnen Kulturkreise.

    Die auf einer Halbinsel im Süden Albaniens gelegene Stadt Butrint wurde Vergil zufolge von Flüchtlingen aus Troja gegründet. Wahrscheinlich ist es allerdings, dass die ersten Siedler Kolonisten aus Korfu waren. Zur Zeit von Christi Geburt wurde der Ort römisch. Als er schließlich unter byzantinische Verwaltung geriet, erlebte das inzwischen zum Bistum erhobene Butrint seine eigentliche Blütezeit. Seit dem 15. Jahrhundert, nach der Besetzung durch die Venezianer, begann sich dann allmählich der Niedergang der Stadt abzuzeichnen.

    Bei Ausgrabungen in und um Butrint wurden Denkmäler freigelegt, die interessante Einblicke in jede einzelne Periode der wechselhaften Stadtgeschichte gewähren.

    Neben den Überresten mehrerer mittelalterlicher Gebäude entdeckte man auch die Ruinen der antiken Siedlung. Am Hang und im heutigen Uferbereich stieß man auf zwei Mauerringe, die auf das 6. Jahrhundert zurückgehen. Ferner wurden ein griechisches Theater, römische Thermen und ein Baptisterium aus dieser Zeit ausgegraben.

    Gamesa liefert 90 Generatoren für Wasserkraft-Anlage in Albanien

    Madrid/Bilbao, Spanien - Der im regenerativen Aktienindex RENIXX World gelistete spanische Windenergieanlagen-Hersteller Gamesa hat ein Lieferabkommen mit Andritz Hydro getroffen, wonach Gamesa Permanent-Magnet-Generatoren für ein Wasserkraftprojekt in Albanien liefern soll. Die 90 Einheiten des Generators der neuesten Generation werden für das Kraftwerk Ashta im Drin River in Albanien eingesetzt. Betreiber der Wasserkraftanlage, die 2012 in Betreib genommen werden soll, ist der auf Wasserkraft spezialisierte österreichische Versorger Verbund.

    Albania: Police seize fake euro imported from Macedonia

    The Albanian police have seized fake euro bills worth EUR 70,000 close to Tirana, the Albanian media announced, cited by Alfa television station.
    13 people were arrested in the operation. According to the initial information the EUR 50 and EUR 100 bills were imported from Macedonia.
    The operation was carried out after the Albanian police had been chasing a group of forgers for three months. Some ten days ago the police in Tirana seized fake euro bills supposedly made by the same group.

    Drugs produced in Albania seized in BiH

    On Thursday the authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina seized 155 kg of marihuana grown in Albania, Makfax news agency reports.
    The drugs were found on the Bosnian-Montenegrin border in a truck. Seven people – citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro – were detained.
    On the basis of the initial information the Bosnian police believe the drug came from Albania and it was illegally smuggled through Montenegro.

    Bankers Petroleum reports 14% increase in Patos Marinza Albania oilfield production for first quarter

    Bankers Petroleum Ltd. (TSX: BNK, AIM: BNK) announced today that first quarter 2010 production averaged 8,282 bopd from the Patos Marinza oilfield in Albania, a 14% increase from the fourth quarter 2009 production of 7,234 bopd. Total current production is in excess of 9,500 bopd. Bankers average wellhead oil price for the first quarter was approximately $47.08 per barrel (representing 62% of the Brent oil price), 4% higher than the fourth quarter 2009 price of $45.10 per barrel.

    Albania raises cash to destroy old ammunition

    Albania's Defense Ministry says it has been promised $10 million ((EURO)7.4 million) from the United States as part of donations from NATO countries to destroy its massive Communist-era ammunition stockpiles by 2013.

    The donation will help fund a (EURO)35.5 million ($47.6 million) project to dispose of about 90,000 tons of excess ammunition that are stored in old army depots and are seen as posing a risk to public safety.

    A huge blast in 2008 at a munitions disposal factory near the capital, Tirana, killed 26 people and injured 300.

    Formerly communist Albania joined NATO last year.

    Italy gives Albania euro51 million in aid

    Italy has pledged euro51 million ($69 million) in aid to Albania to help the country's efforts to integrate in the European Union.Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini signed the deal in Tirana on Monday. Its funds will be used to assist small and medium enterprises as well as agriculture and education projects through 2012.

    Italy is Albania's main trading partner and a major aid contributor.
    Former communist Albania has joined NATO last year, and has also applied for the EU candidate status.

    Also Monday, Denmark donated equipment to Albania's military to dispose of massive Communist-era ammunition stockpiles by 2013. The six industrial cutting saws will be used at two military plants in southern Albania to dispose of about 90,000 tons (81,650 metric tons) of excess ammunition.

    Azerbaijani MP to visit Albania

    Azerbaijani MP will pay a visit to Albania April 20.
    "The ruling New Azerbaijan Party Deputy Executive Secretary Mubariz Gurbanli will attend a meeting of the Legal and Political Affairs Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation," the Milli Mejlis said.

    The agenda of the meeting to be held in the Albanian city of Durrës, includes legal aspects of regulation of civil aviation in the organization member-countries, the prospects for cooperation with the European Parliament and a number of other organizational issues. Gurbanli will share views on issues to be discussed at the event," - the Milli Mejlis said.
