Verbund und EVN bauen Kraftwerk in Albanien

Verbund und EVN haben die gemeinsam geplante Errichtung des Wasserkraftwerks Ashta im Norden Albaniens nun auch per Syndikatsvertrag fixiert. In dieser ersten internationalen Partnerschaft investieren die beiden börsenotierten Stromkonzerne 200 Mio. Euro. Ab 2012 soll das Laufkraftwerk Ashta mit 50 MW Leistung mehr als 240 Mio. kWh Elektrizität im Jahr erzeugen und damit rund 100.000 albanische Haushalte versorgen. Verbund und EVN sind zu je 50 Prozent an der Anlage am Fluss Drin beteiligt.
Realisiert wird das Kraftwerk durch die Projektgesellschaft Energji Ashta mit Sitz in Tirana. Im Rahmen eines Dienstleistungsvertrages ist der Verbund mit Bau und Betriebsführung beauftragt, wie am Mittwoch in einer Aussendung mitgeteilt wurde. Gebaut wird das Flusskraftwerk südlich von Shkoder, der viertgrößten albanischen Stadt. Dem südosteuropäischen Land wird bis 2020 ein jährlicher Stromverbrauchszuwachs von vier Prozent vorhergesagt.

Turkish-Chinese group invests in Albanian chrome
A Turkish-Chinese consortium says it has signed a $25 million (euro18.78 million) agreement with Albania to mine and process chrome.
The 35-year deal will allow Turkey's Kurum Energy, Resources and Metallurgy Sh.a. and China's Sichuan Jiannanchun International Group Ltd. to explore two chrome mines and renovate enrichment plants. The consortium is expected to produce up to 60,000 tons of ferro-chromium every year, it said in a statement Friday.
Albania has deposits of some six million tons of chrome and copper ore located near the border with Kosovo.
The statement said the deal was expected to create hundreds of jobs. Albania is one of Europe's poorest countries.

Petromanas names Cooper to explore Albania
Petromanas Energy Inc., Baar, Switzerland, has named Mark Cooper as senior exploration advisor.
Cooper is a leading structural geologist exploring in fold and thrust belts and has been associated with numerous oil discoveries including the British Columbia foothills and in Colombia. He will commit to find oil on Petromanas’s six blocks in Albania.
Cooper was with the BP PLC team that drilled the Cupiagua, Volcanera, and Florena discoveries in Colombia. He has also been with PanCanadian Petroleum Corp. and EnCana Corp.

Albania: EUR 4 billion hydropower plant deal signed with Swiss consortium
Albania's government Thursday signed a 4-billion- euro (5.35-billion-dollar) deal with Swiss consortium Rudana Investment Group AG for construction of hydropower plants and a refinery in the next four years reports Earth Times.
Balkans.com reported in February that 'Rudana Investment Group of Switzerland is interested in investing in Albania's infrastructure, ports, energy and telecommunications, and also plans to open a branch of its investment bank in the Balkan country."
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sali Berisha attended on Thursday, the opening of business fair German-Austrian-Swiss, which is the third fair runs Union of Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Albania. Attending the ceremony were ambassadors Austrian, German and Swiss Deputy, union representatives and leading Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Albania, Albanian and foreign businessmen, etc..
Prime Minister singled out companies and investment from Germany, Austria and Switzerland for their success and performance. Albania to open embassy in Australia in a drive to boost economic relations
Albania will open an embassy in Australia in a drive to boost political and economic cooperation, Albanian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ilir Meta said during a meeting with Australia’s non-resident ambassador, Jeremy Roger Newman.
“The opening of the Albanian Embassy in Australia will also assist in strengthening the role of the Albanian community in Australia to further expand relations between the two countries,” Mr. Meta said.
The Australian Ambassador, on behalf of the Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs, officially invited the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs to visit Australia.

Albania: Around 4kg of heroin seized in Durres
A total of 3.690 kilos of heroin have been seized by police in the Albanian port town of Durres, MIA reports.
Two people have been detained, citizens of the towns of Patos and Shkodra, Albania.
The drug haul was found during a routine check-up on a car. The heroin was hidden in a cardboard box, divided into six packages.

Albania: Shkorda opens new Tourism office to help foster tourism
The Municipality of Shkodra opened on Monday a new Tourist Information Office, as part of the city’s ongoing tourism promotion efforts.
The office will offer free of charge, high-quality professional tourism information services to tourists and visitors.
Mayor Lorenc Luka and Mr. Stephen Herbaly, a representative of USAID/Albania, delivered remarks. Both speakers highlighted the importance of this office for the city and its tourism businesses.
USAID’s Local Governance Program in Albania (LGPA) and the Municipality of Shkodra are working together to
promote the development of tourism as a generator of employment and economic growth in Shkodra. This initiative
is a public-private partnership between the Municipality, LGPA, and Çelësi Company. The Tourism Information
Office, which was constructed by the Municipality, will be owned and managed by Çelësi. The Municipality will work with the office to promote local tourism and tourism-dependent businesses. The information office will enhance an important sector of Shkodra’s economy, generate private investments, and foster local economic development in the city.
“The Municipality of Shkodra is a strong supporter of the local tourism industry,” said Mayor Luka. “This office will house tourism guides and promote our city’s cultural events that are so important for economic development.”
Shkodra holds several successful annual festivals that have brought in tourists and visitors from across Albania,
including the Carnival Festival, the Artisans Fair, Flower Day, and the City Music Festival.
USAID’s Local Governance Program in Albania (LGPA) works with ten municipalities throughout Albania to foster local economic growth, improve local governance, and strengthen civic and private sector engagement in local development. Albania signs mining concessional agreement with Turkish Kurum and China’s Sichuan
Albanian Minister of Economy, Trade and Energy Dritan Prifti signed a concessional mining agreement with Turkish company Kurum Energy and China’s, Sichuan Jiannanchun International Group Ltd., the ministry reported.
Under the agreement, the local created company, Illyria Minerals Industry Sh.a, will have the right to explore the chrome mine Kalimash, chrome mine Vlahne, chrome enrichment plant of Kalimash and copper enrichment plant of Golaj. The new companyis expected to produce about 210,000 tons per year of chrome from Kalimash and Vlahna mines.
“This is a good sign that Albania is a very attractive place for foreign investment.A giant Chinese company with a highly prestigious company as Kurum, are joining together to invest in Albania and develop chrome industry in the country,” MinisterPrifti said.
The project foresees a 20million euro investment in the first four years and plans to open several hundreds of new jobs in these areas of Albania

Albania’s parliament approves 50mln euro EBRD’s loan for Albania road rehabilitation
The Albanian Parliament approved a 50-million-euro loan by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to modernize up to 500km of regional and rural roads.
The European Investment Bank will provide a matching loan to co-finance the project, which will also receive a 33-million-euro grant from the European Union's executive Commission under pre-accession assistance for 2010/2011, and a 4-million-euro technical assistance grant from the Western Balkans Investment Framework.
The investment is part of a wider national programme to rehabilitate 1,500 km of regional and local roads, financed by the World Bank , OPEC Fund, and the Council of Europe Bank.
The EBRD is the largest institutional investor in Albania, having placed more than 400 million euro in the Balkan country's infrastructure, financial sector, and private corporate sector.
