Mercator of Slovenia to open first hypermarket in Albania

Slovenian food retailer Mercator plans to open its first hypermarket in Albania in the last quarter of 2009, entering FYR Macedonia within three years, as part of an expansion strategy in southeastern Europe, domestic media reported.

"In Albania we signed a lease agreement for the Hypermarket and Intersport store in City Park shopping mall. The analysis of market potential is done and it showed that there is definitely room for us in Albania and we will expand there," company representative Peter Gospodaric was quoted as saying.

The Mercator Group (www-en.mercator.si) is one of the largest retail supermarket chains in southeastern Europe with 17 hypermarkets and more than 1,000 supermarkets and grocery stores.

Mecator Hypermarket will cover 5,000 square meters in a 237,600-square-meter shopping mall, the Citypark (CityPark Albania - Home), which is due to open near Tirana on September 26.

Por fatmirėsisht nė periferi ka zona shumė tė bukura, ku mund tė instalohen kėto projekte”, - tha Berisha. Hoteli “Hilton-Prezė” do tė jetė me 5 yje dhe do tė ndėrtohet vetėm 500 metra larg nga hyrja e aeroportit ndėrkombėtar "Nėnė Tereza". Manas Signed an Extended Farmout Term Sheet for 6 Blocks in Albania

BAAR, Switzerland, July 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Manas Petroleum Corporation today announces that its wholly owned subsidiary, DWM Petroleum AG, signed an extended farmout term sheet covering Blocks A, B, D, E, 2 and 3 in Albania to a finance group of international oil and gas investors. Both parties have agreed to keep the terms confidential until the signing of a shareholders' agreement.
Erik Herlyn, Chief Executive Officer of Manas Petroleum Corp. said: "With this farmout, Manas could both lift the large exploration potential of blocks A, B, D and E and additionally drill a well to appraise the Sphiragu discovery in blocks 2 and 3." This farmout is consistent with Manas` core strategy of acquiring major oil and gas licenses for prospective under-thrust structures and then limiting the financial burdens and risks associated with the exploration and development.

Manas was awarded Blocks A, B, D and E on December 26, 2007 and has explored the blocks since. Portions of Blocks A, B, D and E are now drill-ready. Blocks 2 and 3 were previously explored by Occidental Petroleum, including a 5000 meter deep discovery well in 2001. The council of ministers ratified the production sharing contract for Blocks 2 and 3 to DWM Petroleum on July 8th 2009. Following the award of Blocks 2 and 3, data regarding Occidental's discovery were made available and the Company is currently preparing a 51-101 compliant estimate of the discovery. The farmout is subject to the execution of a final agreement with the farm-out partner.

UN gives technological boost to 500,000 Albanian school students

Almost half a million Albanian students now have access to modern computer laboratories, high-speed Internet and training in information technology skills thanks to a new United Nations-backed initiative aiming to improve their employment prospects. As a result of the “e-School” programme, some 379 high schools and 800 elementary schools across Albania have been equipped with up-to-date computer technology, benefiting some 450,000 students and 25,000 teachers.

“For us in the Western Balkans ICT or information technologies is a major cornerstone of our activities, particularly with a view to the European Union accession of these countries,” Moises Venancio, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) Senior Programme Manager and Team Leader for the Western Balkans told the UN News Centre today.

Mr. Venancio underscored the importance of the programme “in terms of helping to train the future generation of Europeans who will have to compete in a far different and far more complicated labour environment than their parents will have done.”
Leonik Tomeo Secondary School, with more than 950 students and teachers, is using the tools to produce a school newspaper while, as one student put it, joining the rest of the world’s teenagers on the Internet.

Before the “e-schools” project was launched in 2005, the situation in many schools was “very primitive, in some cases perhaps one computer for all the kids in the school,” said Mr. Venancio.

“Some of these schools are really in rural areas that are very deprived of anything, in particular any access to any type of new information,” he added. “So this has really enabled kids who live in very poor marginalized rural areas to benefit from the advances of having online access to information and what’s going on in the world.”
The initiative was financed with a $25 million loan from the World Bank and support from a number of private and public donors, including Western Union Corporation, the Albanian Banking Association and UFO, a private university.
