President Hosny Mubarak
We are shocked to hear about the abduction, on Jan. 3, 2006 of the Coptic Christian woman Theresa Ghatas Kama, 19, by Islamic extremists. Credible reports state that she is still being held captive by them in El Saff. Mrs. Kamal was briefly able to call up her aunt and tell her that her abductors were forcibly trying to convert her to Islam.
To this day, we have not been informed of any police attempts to ascertain the whereabouts of Mrs. Kamal. We urgently ask you to see to it that an official investigation takes place immediately and that Theresa Ghatas Kamal is safely returned to her family.
This abduction of a young Christian woman is unfortunately not an isolated case: Heidi Hakim Mankerious Salib was abducted in Alexandria in June 2004; Neveen Maher Albert Morcos, in Alexandria as well, on March 3, 2005; Marianna Rezk Shafik Attalah in El Fayoum on May 30, 2005; and Haba Nabil Narouz Ghali in Cairo on September 28, 2005. We call for urgent intervention on your part in these as well as other cases, so that the human rights violations perpetrated by Islamists in your country will come to an end.
Yours sincerely and respectfully,
