Salute to Albanian Tolerance, Resistance, and Hope: Remembering Besa and the Holocaust

Sheraton Hotel, New York City May 15, 2005

In celebrating the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Jews from the Nazi concentration camps by the United States and its allies, Jewish Americans will join with Albanians Americans in honoring Albanian families who saved all their Jewish neighbors and Jewish refugees, in Albania and Albanian lands in the former Yugoslavia, from the Holocaust. We will also commemorate the 15th anniversary of the founding of the Civic League, beginning in 1990 with our bringing Ibrahim Rugova and twelve Albanian leaders from Kosova to an historic hearing in Washington, holding the great Sheraton dinner on April 28, and the historic trip by Congressman Tom Lantos and Joe DioGuardi to occupied Kosova and Communist Albania in May of that year.

Congressman Tom Lantos, a Jewish American Holocaust survivor, will pay special tribute to the Albanian people for doing what no other nation in Europe did during World War II in rescuing all Jews who fled from the Nazi regime to Albanian lands. International Relations Committee Chairman Henry Hyde and former Chairman Ben Gilman will join Congressman Lantos on this special occasion. Former Congressman Joe DioGuardi, as dinner chairman, and cochair Shirley Cloyes DioGuardi will thank the Jewish American people for being the first to support the NATO war against the barbaric regime of Slobodan Milosevic and to stop the genocide in Kosova.

Harvey Sarner and Norman Gershman—for their important work of remembering the heroic contributions of Albanians who risked their lives to save their Jewish brothers and sisters. Harvey Sarner’s book, Rescue in Albania, will be distributed to everyone attending the dinner. Norm Gershman’s fine art photographs of the Albanian families who saved Jews from the Nazi Holocaust will be shown in a short film at the dinner.

Mike Fishman, President of Local32BJ Service Employees International Union, which employs thousands of Albanians in the New York area.

15th Anniversary Dinner 'Salute to Albanian Tolerance, Resistance, and Hope: Remembering Besa and the Holocaust'
When: Sunday, May 15, 2005 Where: The Sheraton Hotel, 53rd Street and Seventh Avenue, New York, New York

NEW YORK, May 10 /PRNewswire/ -- On the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II and the liberation of the Nazi death camps, there is another story that is seldom told. That story concerns the Albanians of Southeast Europe, who risked their lives -- and succeeded -- to save thousands of Jews from the horrors of the Holocaust. The Albanian rescuers, overwhelmingly of the Islamic faith, acted out of the Albanian tradition known as Besa -- an ancient code of honor that obliges Albanians to save the life of anyone seeking refuge, even if it means risking one's own life. The Albanian example is one of compassion, kindness, and religious tolerance, not of hatred and terror.

On Sunday, May 15, the Albanian American Civic League and Foundation will honor and remember the heroism of the Albanian people, as well as celebrate their ongoing religious tolerance and resistance to oppression. Congressman Tom Lantos, Ranking Member of the House International Relations Committee and a Holocaust survivor, will deliver the keynote address. Norman Gershman, a well-known fine art photographer, will premiere his inspiring photos taken in Albania and Kosova of the families who rescued Jews during World War II, which will be exhibited at Yad Vashem, in Jerusalem, next fall. Gershman will be honored along with Harvey Sarner, author of Rescue in Albania, and Mike Fishman, president of Local 32BJ. House International Relations Committee Chairman Henry Hyde and former Chairman Ben Gilman, New York State Senators Nick Spano and Jeffrey Klein, NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and Jewish, Christian and Muslim religious leaders also will be in attendance.

Additional special guests include: Hon. Ardian Gjini, Minister of the Environment, Kosova; Professors Petrit Zorba and Apostol Kotani, Albanian- Israeli Friendship Association; Bishop Mark Sopi and Frs. Shan Zefi and Lush Gjergji from Kosova; Imam Jusuf Bala, Albanian American Islamic Center; Fr. Pjeter Popaj, Our Lady of Shkodra Church; Rabbi Joseph Potasnik, New York Board of Rabbis; and Rabbi Arthur Schneier, Park Avenue Synagogue.
