Prime Minister Sali Berisha to Receive Eisenhower Medallion

PTPI's Mary Jean Eisenhower and Joe Patterson with the Albanian Prime Minister and his wife
Kansas City Missouri, USA – People to People International, a U.S. non-governmental organization, has selected Albanian Prime Minister, His Excellency Dr. Sali Berisha, to receive its 2009 Eisenhower Medallion. Each year, PTPI bestows this award, which is its highest honor, to an individual or organization that has made an exceptional contribution to world peace.

The prestigious Eisenhower Medallion was established in the honor of the 34th President of the United States of America, Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was the founder of People to People International, as well as Commander of Allied Forces during the Second World War and Commander in Chief of NATO forces.

In a letter sent to the Prime Minister, informing him of his selection to receive the award, Mary Eisenhower, PTPI’s President/CEO and granddaughter of President Eisenhower, said, “After experiencing firsthand the efforts you have made to bridge peace between Albania, neighboring countries and global communities, I find you most deserving of this award.” Ms. Eisenhower recently met with Dr. Berisha in Albania, to witness the opening of the tunnel connecting Albania and Kosovo.

The medallion, which bears an image of President Eisenhower on one side and the logo of PTPI on the reverse, will be presented during PTPI’s Americas Regional Meeting to be held September 3-5, 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada USA. Dr. Berisha’s wife, Dr. Liri Berisha, and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Edith Harxhi, are expected to attend the gala ceremony to accept the award on the Prime Minister’s behalf.

Past Eisenhower Medallion recipients include President Lech Walesa, Her Excellency Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, Carol Bellamy, Maestro Luciano Pavarotti, His Late Majesty King Hussein I of Jordan (posthumously), The Honorable Archbishop Desmond M. Tutu, President Árpád Göncz, Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin (posthumously), President Anwar el Sadat (posthumously), Mother Teresa and former United States Presidents George H.W. Bush, Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan.
People to People International (PTPI), with World Headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri USA, was established by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on September 11, 1956 to enhance international understanding and friendship through educational, cultural and humanitarian activities involving the exchange of ideas and experiences directly among peoples of different countries and diverse cultures. Today, as a NGO with a U.S., not-for-profit, [501 (c)(3)] tax rating, PTPI has a presence in 135 countries with more than 80,000 families and individuals actively participating in People to People International programs.
