Boris Tadic zu Besuch in Rumänien

    Basescu welcomes Serbian counterpart

Serbian President Boris Tadic was greeted by President Traian Basescu yesterday at the start of a one-day visit to the Romanian capital, during which the two head of states tackled issues such as trade, ethnic minorities and the future status of Kosovo.
Other issues included on the agenda included the construction of an oil pipeline from the Romanian Black Sea city of Constanta to Trieste, Italy that would pass through Serbia and relaxing visa restrictions between the two neighboring countries, the president's office said in a statement. Currently citizens of the two neighboring countries need visas to cross the border.
On the Kosovo issue, Basescu has said that the province should be kept within Serbia's borders, and stressed the need for dialogue on the issue, his office said.
Furthermore, Basescu said that General Radko Mladic, currently wanted for several war crimes, should surrender if he really cares about his people.
"Currently, the issue of Mladic hinders Serbia's EU accession process," pointed out Basescu.
The president also announced that Romania plans to open a consular section in the Timoc Valley - an important region in Serbia.

    Romanian consulate in Timoc Valley

After yesterday's meeting with Serbian President Boris Tadic, the President of Romania Traian Basescu announced about informing Serbian officials on Bucharest authorities' intention to open a consulate in the Timoc Valley. Basescu mentioned that in his meeting with Tadic he invoked the "need for symmetry" with view to recognition of the Romanian Orthodox Church in Serbia, since in Romania the Serbian Orthodox Church was officially acknowledged. The two officials also talked about completing the bilateral agreement on visas for the two states' citizens and economic collaboration. Tadic promised Romania to use all institutional means to protect the rights of Romanians living in Serbia, just as President Basescu did with the rights of the Serbians in Romania. (A.H.)
