Macedonia makes progress in fight against corruption: GRECO

Group of States against Corruption (GRECO) president Marin Mrcela says the Republic of Macedonia has "more or less" met or works on meeting recommendations of the third evaluation round, MIA reports from Strasbourg.

"GRECO provided 17 recommendations in May of last year. Those referring to incrimination have more or less been met. What remains is an additional effort regarding funding of political parties. I know that Macedonia has passed a new law in this regard, which we will soon assess. I do not have any doubts in Macedonia's political will for settlement of these issues, since this can be seen in the way procedures are undertaken upon GRECO recommendations and legislative operations in the field of fight against corruption", says Mrcela.

According to him, the problem of corruption is not only present in Macedonia and the Balkans, but in the whole of Europe.

"Corruption is a problem that exists everywhere, no country is immune to corruption. It is the first item on the Council of Europe's agenda", adds Mrcela.

Financing of political parties is one of the areas where almost all countries have enormous room for progress. GRECO focuses on certain positions and practice, i.e. training, court rulings etc.

Mrcela says the state must demonstrate political will not only for adoption of laws, but also for their enforcement.

"There are good and bad examples in this regard, since even the best law will not produce good results in the hands of bad people. Therefore, the combination of good laws and appropriate people will lead to something good for citizens in the fight against corruption", underlines GRECO president Marin Mrcela.

GRECO was established in 1999 by the Council of Europe to monitor States' compliance with the organisation's anti-corruption standards. GRECO's objective is to improve the capacity of its members to fight corruption by monitoring their compliance with Council of Europe anti-corruption standards through a dynamic process of mutual evaluation and peer pressure. It helps to identify deficiencies in national anti-corruption policies, prompting the necessary legislative, institutional and practical reforms. GRECO also provides a platform for the sharing of best practice in the prevention and detection of corruption.

    "Moneymaker" plante Ausbruch aus Gefängnis

    FLUCHT VERHINDERT

    29.03.2013, 17:18

    Monday, 01 April 2013

The governments of Macedonia and Serbia in May will hold a joint meeting in Belgrade for talks on issues of common interest and future cooperation. All efforts made by the two countries are focused on June when a date is expected to be obtained for opening negotiations with the EU. European integration and good neighbourly relations as well as ways to boost the business cooperation were discussed on Monday by Parliament Speaker Trajko Veljanoski and Serbian PM Ivica Dacic.

During his official visit to Belgrade, Veljanoski met with Dacic prior to a meeting of Serbia's top officials who are deciding on who should take part in Tuesday's talks about Kosovo in Brussels, MIA reports from Belgrade.
For Macedonia, which nourishes traditionally favourable relations with Serbia, the visit is focused on the countries' good neighbourly ties and ways to intensify cooperation in all spheres.
At the meeting with Dacic, the Macedonian Speaker stressed the need of strengthening bilateral business cooperation.

Earlier, Veljanoski met with his Serbian counterpart Nebojsa Stefanovic and with the group of friendship with Macedonia's Parliament.
Later in the day, the Macedonian Speaker is scheduled to meet with members of the Macedonian community in Serbia. On Tuesday, Veljanoski will meet with Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic.

Macedonia extends visa-free regime for Ukrainians until 2018, says ambassador

Macedonia has extended its visa-free regime for Ukrainian citizens for five years, the country's ambassador to Kyiv, Aco Spasenoski, has said.

The ambassador announced this at a joint briefing with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Leonid Kozhara in Kyiv on Monday.

According to the Macedonian ambassador, Ukrainians can travel to Macedonia without visas until 2018, which will help strengthen human contacts between the citizens of the two countries, as well as develop relations in various fields, including in culture, education, science and the economy.

He also assured the Ukrainian side that Macedonia would do whatever is necessary to improve and strengthen relations between the two countries.

The Ukrainian foreign minister, in turn, said that the Macedonian government's decision to extend the visa-free regime with Ukraine entered into force on March 15, 2013, and Ukrainians could already visit the country without visas.

Kozhara said that Ukraine also introduced a visa-free regime for the citizens of Macedonia, which will be in effect until 2015.

"I hope it will have a positive effect on the relations between the two countries," the minister said.

According to him, Ukraine has already established visa-free travel with seventeen countries.

ASTANA. March 28. KAZINFORM Macedonia welcomes investments of Kazakhstani companies into its oil and gas industry.Non-resident ambassador of the Republic of Macedonia Darko Angelov told a briefing in Astana on Thursday after presenting credentials to Kazakhstan's Secretary of State Marat Tazhin.
"The all-round cooperation between Kazakhstan and Macedonia has gained momentum over the last couple of years. And I would like to take this opportunity to invite all Kazakhstanis to come and visit Macedonia," Mr. Angelov said.
The Macedonian diplomat also mentioned that in the course of the meeting with the Kazakh Secretary of State they mapped out key spheres for cooperation, but set out the economy as the priority.
"Macedonia would gladly cooperate with Kazakhstan in the pharmaceutical sector. We also very much welcome investments of Kazakhstani companies into the Macedonian oil and gas industry," he added.
