EU, NATO Pledge Support for BiH's Euro-Integration

"The Union's objective is not only to stabilise the country, but also to help it make the required social, economic and political transformation," said Jaap de Hoop Scheffer. [AFP]

During their joint visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) on Thursday (15 July), NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer and EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana are expected to assure officials in Sarajevo of continued support for their country. The visit comes only days after the Union formally approved the EUFOR military force, which is to replace SFOR by the end of the year. It will be the EU's largest military operation to date.

In an article published by the International Herald Tribune on Thursday, de Hoop Scheffer and Solana described their visit as "a sign that this transformation of the international presence -- the transition from SFOR to EUFOR -- is a common project of the EU and NATO".

Macedonia strikes power deal seen crucial for peace
    15 Jul 2004 10:13:31 GMT

    By Kole Casule

SKOPJE, July 15 (Reuters) - Macedonia's coalition government has struck a
long-delayed deal handing more powers to the local level, a crucial part of the
2001 peace accord granting greater rights to the ethnic Albanian minority.

The agreement late on Wednesday, unpopular among many in the Macedonian
majority, should give the country's 500,000 Albanians more control over
municipalities where they form a majority.

It represents a final step in implementing the NATO-brokered deal that ended
seven months of clashes between government security forces and ethnic Albanian
    rebels three years ago.

The issue has sparked fierce debate in Macedonia, a small Balkan state of just
two million people. Protestors backed by the rightwing opposition VMRO-DPMNE
party have accused the government of dividing Macedonia along ethnic lines.

Diplomats say the deal, which still has to be adopted by parliament, is vital
for Macedonia's ambition to join the European Union, having formally applied
    for membership in March.

"If we want to build Macedonia as a European country we must go forward," said
    Defence Minister Vlado Buckovski.

Auf dem Balkan ist die Polit Mafia das grösste Problem

    Serbischer Anti-Korruptionsrat kritisiert Regierung heftig

    – Premier Kostunica zeigt angeblich kein Interesse für Beseitigung der Korruption

    Belgrad, 16.7.2004, GLAS JAVNOSTI, serb.

Kosovo Media Boss Launches Election Bid

Prominent journalist kicks off political career pledging to push for more effective governance and economic management.
Veton Surroi wird für das Kosovaren Parlament kandidieren.

Vor allem soll eine neue Politische Kraft im Kosovo entstehen.

By Arben Qirezi in Pristina (BCR No 507, 15-Jul-04)

Journalist-turned-politician Veton Surroi, set to run for election in October as a leader of the fledgling Ora citizens' list, says that he wants to shift the focus of politics in the entity and his presence on the hustings looks set to enliven the campaign.

Ora, or clock, brings together a number of opinion makers and activists. At a packed rally in a Pristina cinema on June 29, Surroi told the audience that citizens should start voting for changes, which the current government seems incapable of initiating.

    Comment: Surroi the Politician

He may face a fiery political baptism, but Veton Surroi could in time play an influential role in local politics.

By Ismet Hajdari in Pristina (BCR No 507, 15-Jul-04)

The recent announcement that Veton Surroi, publisher of the main Kosovan daily Koha Ditore, is entering politics, offers room for reflection on the implications of the move for Kosovan politics.

Surroi has said he will join the civic movement Ora, which will take part in general elections in Kosovo, expected in October.

This can be seen as good news, in that it undoubtedly reflects widespread dissatisfaction with political leaders and highlights their failure to handle Kosovo’s re-emerging crisis.

What is becoming clearer by the day in Kosovo politics is the urgent need for an alternative to the two big party blocs, to broaden voters’ choices in the autumn polls.

The two blocs are the Democratic League of Kosovo, LDK, the firmest established party since 1989, and the parties of the “war” bloc, which emerged after the 1999 conflict from the Kosovo Liberation Army movement. These are the Democratic Party of Kosovo, PDK, and the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo, AAK.

    A) Die Ehe Frau von Albanischen "König" Leka Zoku ist gestorben an Herzinfarkt mit 63 Jahren

    B) In Albanien wurde das Anti-Mafia Gesetzt verabschiedet.

Wife of Albanian Crown Heir Dies

TIRANA, Albania -- The wife of crown heir Leka Zog died Saturday (17 July) from a heart condition. She was 63. "Her Majesty Susan I Zog is no longer with us," a spokesman for the Albanian royal family said in a short statement. Originally from Australia, Susan Barbara Cullen-Ward married Leka in Biarritz in October 1975. The couple has one son.

Leka was born a few days after Italy occupied Albania at the start of World War II, and lived in exile until the collapse of communism in 1990. In 1997, he lost a referendum on restoring the monarchy and left the country, but returned again to launch a political movement that aims to take part in next year's general elections. (Reuters - 17/07/04)

Albanian Cabinet Adopts Anti-Mafia Draft Package

TIRANA, Albania -- The Albanian government announced Friday (16 July) that it has adopted a package of anti-mafia legislation, as well as related amendments to the country's penal code. The adopted measures provide for the freezing of assets from organised crime, and prohibit officials convicted of corruption from holding public office for a specified period of time.

Also on Friday, an association representing victims of political persecution called on President Alfred Moisiu not to approve a law on compensation recently passed by parliament. The controversial law was adopted by deputies of the ruling Socialist Party after opposition MPs left the parliamentary session. (Albanian Daily News - 17/07/04)
