    08/09/2006

TIRANA, Albania -- The ruling Democratic Party (DP) announced an initiative Thursday (7 September) to track the assets and finances of all senior state officials. DP parliamentary caucus chief Bamir Topi says it is in response to the opposition Socialist Party's (SP) accusations against DP leader and Prime Minister Sali Berisha, whom SP says hid his family assets. Later Thursday, SP spokesman Sajmir Tahiri welcomed the initiative but said the party will insist on forming a special inquiry commission in parliament to examine Berisha's holdings. Albania's Berisha visits Athens

    13/09/2006

ATHENS, Greece -- Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha began a two-day official visit to Athens on Tuesday (12 September), meeting first with Parliament Speaker Anna Benaki-Psarouda. She reaffirmed her country's support for Albania's EU integration bid, and said the fact that the ethnic Greek minority is represented in Albania's coalition government demonstrates Tirana's commitment to observing international standards for minority rights. On Wednesday, Berisha was scheduled to hold talks with his Greek counterpart, Costas Karamanlis, as well as with President Karolos Papoulias.

In other news, Albanian President Alfred Moisiu met with the new EU envoy in Tirana, German Ambassador Helmuth Lohan. On Tuesday, Moisiu assured Lohan of Albania's determination to implement provisions of the recently enforced EU Stabilisation and Association Agreement and move forward on the road toward full EU membership. Albania's president, two main political parties embroiled in airline scandal

    14/09/2006

TIRANA, Albania -- Local media reported on Wednesday (13 September) that a scandal involving a local private air carrier, Albatros Airways, now also involves the president and the two main parties, the ruling Democratic Party (DP) and the main opposition Socialist Party (SP). Flights of Albatros Airways, which is co-owned by President Alfred Moisiu's nephew, were recently suspended at the request of the DP-led government's General Directorate of Civil Aviation. Earlier this week, the DP accused Moisiu of using his influence to lobby on the airline's behalf.

Moisiu has made no official comment, but the SP on Wednesday described the issue as an attempt to exert pressure on the president. The DP wants him to sack Chief Prosecutor Theodhori Sollaku for alleged links to organised crime. Moisiu has said he needs time to consider the matter. 20/09/2006

TIRANA, Albania -- Parliament decided on Tuesday (19 September) to establish an ad hoc inquiry commission that would check the assets of all senior state officials. The proposal by the ruling Democratic Party (DP) was passed with the votes of the DP-led majority, as the opposition rejected it.
