International community should say 'No' to Greece, accept name Republic of Macedonia - former mediator
Skopje, 15 September 2012 (MIA) - The time has come for the international community to say that the 20-year delay in the acceptance of name Republic of Macedonia, solely on the grounds of objections by one state, is unacceptable, former mediator in the Macedonia-Greece name dispute, Robin O'Neil told Macedonian Television programme Porta.
"My advice to the Macedonian Government is to once again raise this issue before the United Nations, claiming that the past 20 years have shown that Greece's internal stability has not been disrupted by Macedonia's existence under its proper name, whereas the region's stability and international law require the recognition of the Republic of Macedonia by the UN and all its member-states under this name", stresses O'Neil.
According to him, Greece would have a case if a group in Greek province Macedonia wanted to unify with Macedonia. In such case, one could say that the country's name is provocative. However, this is not the case with Northern Greece and there are no problems of this kind.
"The Macedonian Government has two important interests in its foreign affairs. The first is to obtain a formal international recognition of its legal name, Republic of Macedonia. The second is to join NATO, for which it is already making an enormous informal contribution, and the European Union. The path for achievement of the second interest is already open through the Interim Accord provisions by using interim name FYROM. However, negotiations over the dispute's settlement would resume", says the former mediator.
He says it is very disappointing that 17 years after the Interim Accord signing, Greece is still refusing to seriously negotiate over the name issue.
"The International Court of Justice ruling means that Greece has no right to object Macedonia's efforts to join NATO or EU under name FYROM. I believe that the Macedonian Government can freely apply for membership in these two institutions under this name, since Greece cannot object due to its signature on the Interim Accord", underlies Robin O'Neil.
